Children and Prayer Challenge--Day 10

I love the sweet words of this song and the melody that rings in my ears from the times I have heard children’s voices sing it. Oh how I long for my children to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge! Today our focus word is “Know” as we pray for our children. May we end our 10 days of praying together by interceding for our children to know the love that surpasses knowledge!

Father, thank you that you love my children. I pray Father that they will truly know you…your love and your ways. I treasure in my heart the way that you know them and draw them unto you. Lord, I pray that the eyes of their hearts would be enlighted so that they would know the hope to which you have called them. I pray that they would know what love is: that Jesus Christ laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for others. May they know you, be known by you, and make you known!

We made it! What a journey it has been and I am so thankful you chose to join me! I pray that the God of hope has filled you with joy and peace as you have trusted Him in prayer for your children. Lord, thank you that you are our strength. Lord I pray that you will strengthen my children as they move in times of resistance. Thank you that as they hope in you, you renew their strength. Lord I pray that you will enable them to face difficulty, pain or danger, knowing that you are with them and your rod and staff comfort them. Grant them the courage to continue to move with you no matter the resistance. I pray that out of your glorious riches you would strengthen them with power through your Spirit in their inner beings, so that Christ will dwell in their hearts through faith. Thank you that you are able to do immeasurably more than I could ask or imagine according to your power that is at work within them.

I am excited about this prayer focus today! I asked Donald if he would be a part of this journey and if he would possibly write one of the focuses for this challenge. Today's focus on influence comes from his heart and perspective as a dad. Blessings!



Influence



We've prayed for many good things to surround our children including our Lord's truth, strength, and protection. We desire and pray for them to have a holy environment where they can know the love of God and the freedom that comes with his Spirit. In this, we also realize that as parents we play a large role in our child’s environment.

Today we are going to pray for those people who influence our child--role models, mentors, teachers, and especially parents (yes, pray for yourself). These relationships are created by God and hold great purpose. We are to teach and discipline in ways that do not discourage. We are to be role models in how we love God and love others just as Jesus is our role model. What an overwhelming responsibility, and how often my ability and actions fall short of my hopes and expectations. As in all things we must look to God and pray for him to lead us and work through us in our parenting.

Lord Jesus, we praise you for being the ultimate role model…for showing us what it means to love God first and in doing so loving others with a sacrificial life. I pray you send teachers and role models into my children’s lives who know you as Lord and fervently seek after you. Protect my children from false teachers by exposing that which is not truth. What an awesome thing it is that you have established me as a parent. I confess that I can see how often I fall short of having the ability to discipline and teach, but that when you are my focus I have freedom as a parent.

"Bless Your Heart"

Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” He wants us to love Him with all of our being…our inner most desire, our spirit, our thoughts, our efforts. 1 Chronicles 28:9 says, “And you…acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you…” As we pray for our children today, we are praying that they will seek to devote themselves to Him—to give Him their hearts as they receive His heart for them.



Lord, I am so thankful that as my children delight in you, you will give them the desires of their hearts. I long for you to be their one true desire…that they might focus their hearts on you and love you with all that they are. Thank you, Father, that as they seek you with their hearts they will find you. Create in them pure hearts. Help them to trust in you with all their hearts and lean not on their own understanding. Help them to set their minds on things above and consider the life of Christ so that they do not lose heart.

Children and Prayer Challenge--Day Six

The Fear of the Lord



This picture was taken of Mason when he was 3 and we were visiting some good friends in Seattle. We had stopped at this park one morning to eat our breakfast and afterwards Mason wanted to play. Over and over he went to the top of the hill and ran as fast as he could down the hill to us. We had so much fun watching him run with such a carefree spirit.

Our children have such adventure within them! Today we are praying that our children will seize the adventure in their lives and run with eyes fixed on Jesus. With hearts undivided, visions fixed, paths set…that they would risk everything and chase after Him.

I believe this chase is the fear of the Lord.

Father, teach and inspire my children to fear You. May they seize the adventure of chasing after you. May they fix their eyes on you and exalt you to the highest place. To take hold of you is their reward. Help them as they choose to throw off everything that hinders and to rid themselves of the idols and sin that weigh them down. May they choose instead to worship you above all else…pursuing you and loving you with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. Give them singleness of heart and action that they would fear you. Teach them your ways as they seek first your kingdom and chase after you!

Fruitfulness

Fruitfulness is the product of a detailed process. A seed is planted, takes root, requires just the right nourishment, grows a stem, develops buds that open into flowers, and then develops fruit…then is pruned in order to bear more fruit.

The fruit a plant bears tells a story of the plant that produces it, is evidence that a plant is alive and growing healthy, is the means by which the plant disseminates seeds, and is useful as a food that offers healthy benefits and good taste. Our focus today is to pray for fruitfulness for our children. The Bible says in John 15:5: “If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Lord, I pray that my children will abide in you...trust you...delight in you...have confidence in you...and meditate day and night on your word...so that they might bear fruit. Plant them by streamsn of water and grow them in favorable conditions so that they might be fruitful. I give them to you, the Vinedresser, knowing that apart from you they can do nothing. May they live by the Spirit and bear fruit that will last.

Growth

“A seed grows when it has good soil, along with the right amount of warmth and water. First, the seed’s coat, or skin, splits open. A tiny root pushes out the bottom of the seed. Next, a stem with leaves pushes out the top. It starts growing upward. The new plant gets energy from food stored in the seed. The stem breaks through the soil. The leaves uncurl. Lord it is You that makes all things grow. I lift my children to you today and ask that you grow them and strengthen them physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Plant them in good soil and provide them with the nourishment they need to grow strong healthy lives. As they trust you, I pray that you will plant them by streams of water and in good soil…that they might hear your word and accept it. Grow them in the knowledge of God and strengthen them to have endurance and patience. Cover them in righteousness that they might “flourish like a palm tree, and grow like a cedar…as they are planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God (Psalm 92:12-13)."

Truth and Freedom…A Lighted Pathway

As our children grow, they are ever learning and ever changing. They are on a journey and before them is a pathway filled with unknowns…beauty…mystery...challenges…choices. Today we are praying with a focus on truth and freedom. As we search the Bible for understanding of truth and freedom, we learn that Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life”(John 14:6). Though the quote above is an author’s take on freedom, I believe that the “something” and the “well” that quenches the “thirst” he describes is satisfied in the person of Jesus. As our children grow to know the Living Water, He guides them in His truth…His ways. And as they hold to Him, follow Him, and know the Truth; the Truth will set them free!

Lord I rejoice that You have come as the light of the world. As my children grow and live in this world, I pray that You will be their light and guide…teaching them Your ways and leading them along the path they should follow. I pray that they will know You as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Guide them in your truth and teach them. Thank you that your light and love is ever before them. Help them to hold to your teachings, follow you, and continually walk in your truth. Thank you, Jesus, that you have come to bring freedom. I pray that my children will not be burdened by the yoke of slavery, but will know the Truth and the truth will set them free! I pray that they will know Jesus…as a baby, as a boy, in His life’s ministry, and in His death. May they proclaim that the Son has set them free and they are free indeed!

Dwelling Place

“Dwelling place” is our prayer focus as we pray for our children today. A dwelling place is by definition “a building or place of shelter to live in; place of residence; abode; home.” This place where we abide is a place where we find protection, comfort, consistency, help, security, truth and influence.



Lord, I pray that my children will know You as their Dwelling Place and will find security at home in this dwelling place you've given us. You are our provider, our protector, our hiding place. Please make our home a place of security and safety. I pray, Father, that they will dwell in the shelter of the most High and find rest and protection there...that they can lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone make them dwell in safety. I praise you for the promise that "blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you." Please nurture the hearts of worship in my children and draw them into your courts with praise.

Children and Prayer Challenge--Day One

**I am so happy that you have chosen to join me on this prayer journey on behalf of our children. I have such excitement and anticipation for what God will do over the next two weeks! Each day you will find a new post and prayer focus on this blog. I intend to have a short explanation of the topic, a sample prayer, prayer points and prayer activities each day. Please use any or all of the content of the post to guide you as you pray for your child. The prayer points section will include scripture verses that relate to the topic. If praying scripture is new to you, you can use the scripture to guide your thoughts and prayer or personalize the scripture to pray for your child. The prayer point activities section includes suggestions for multi-sensory ways to pray. I will not be too specific in this section and hope that you will be inspired to use your learning style and creativity to engage and pray in different ways.

As we share this time together, I hope that you will feel encouraged to share any thoughts, revelations, hopes, and prayers. My prayer for you is this: That we will "hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." Wonderful Creations


One of my favorite children’s books is “You are Special” by Max Lucado. It’s a beautiful story of these wooden people, called Wemmicks, and their struggle with identity and purpose. One Wemmick in particular learns of the Creator’s love and acceptance in the midst of the judgements of the world around him. He learns that he is special because the creator made him and loves him just the way he is.





Thank you, Lord, that my children are fearfully and wonderfully made. What miracles they are! Lord, I long for my children to know you as creator and to know how wonderfully You have made them. Help them as they grow and find their identity and purpose in this world. Teach them your ways, Oh Lord, that they would know your plans for them. They are created as your workmanship…may you raise them up to show your power and glory and to proclaim your goodness. As they grow in knowledge and understanding, may they reflect your glory and be transformed into your likeness with ever-increasing glory.

Children and Prayer Challenge

With the beginning of this new year, I have been inspired by the Lord to push further into praying for my children. My boys are such treasures to me and it is a privilege to love on them, teach them, and pray for them. I know that you as mothers must feel the same way about your children! Several years ago I had a conversation with a friend of mine who shared her testimony of praying for her children all through their growing up and feeling certain of her call as an intercessor in this way. Her children are now grown and have children of their own and their lives are true examples of the Lord's protection, favor, and promise. After that conversation, I was encouraged and knew that one of my key jobs as a mother is interceding on behalf of my children.

Earlier this week, I spoke to my good friend and neighbor about this focus of mine this year and asked her if she'd join me in doing some sort of prayer challenge for 10 days that would help develop our focus and habit in praying for our kids. She agreed and in our conversation we realized that we knew several moms who might want to join us in this challenge...which brings us to the reason I'm writing. I wanted to invite you to join me in lifting up our children for 10 days (starting Monday, January 19th and ending on Friday, January 30th.) Starting on Monday I will be posting on my blog a daily prayer topic that can be our focus as we pray. No matter your age or your kids' ages, I would love for you to join us in prayer. One of the coolest things about technology and the "blogging world" is that no matter where we live we can join as praying community in this challenge. I would love for you not only to join me in praying but to share comments regarding how the Lord is moving in your prayer time, your life, and your kids' lives!

BMM Tag

My friend, Candace , blogged yesterday about a recent "Bad Mommy Moment" (BMM). To join and support her I thought I'd share a BMM story...

Not long after we moved to Austin, Mason and I had a plan to meet a couple of friends at the park and were getting ready. I thought we'd make an adventure of it and put him in the jogging stroller so that we could walk over to the park. In the garage, I buckled Mason in the stroller and then reached into the car to get my sunglasses. As I closed the car door, I turned around to find my little boy rolling backwards down our steeply sloped driveway, across the street, and into the curb! (No children were harmed in the making of this horrible BMM).

So Candace...you're not the only mommy that allows your children to roll backwards across the street and into your neighbor's curb. I knew God planted us across the street from each other for a reason!

A Boy and A Wagon

Over Christmas, Mason was playing at Grammie's house and found a wagon filled with books. He was pulling the wagon around the house and found me in the hallway and said:

"Mommy, I want to collect books to give to kids who don't have any."

It was such a cool, compassionate moment with my soon-to-be 5 year old. It makes me think of the parable Jesus told in Matthew 25 when He says, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." I am so thankful for Mason's sweet heart and example of how to love others.

We have partnered with Mason's preschool and Christian Women's Job Corps in Austin and will be having a book drive in February to collect new and gently used books for children in the Austin area. I'll let ya know how it goes!

A Big Day for Big Boys!

Yesterday was a very "milestone" day at our house. It was an over-cast day and not much going on, but my boys were busy growing up! I wanted to share these moments with you as they are ones I will never forget. Hope you enjoy sharing these special moments with us!

Yesterday morning Mason asked me if he could take piano lessons. I told him that would be great and asked if he'd like for someone else to teach him or for me to give them to him. He asked if I would and said that he wanted to do it right then! This is what he learned in his first piano lesson:




Haden also had a big day yesterday! He has been working on the art of crawling for a couple of weeks now; getting on hands and knees, rocking back and forth, pushing himself up into sitting position and back again. Yesterday, he figured it all out and was off! He will get to anything that he wants bad enough and is very proud when he does so!

This was during our week with "Buttermilk"--Mason's class' animal buddy. We had so much fun with Buttermilk and had all sorts of adventures including: a birthday party, movie night, and a camp out...complete with roasting marshmellows! This picture is of Mason, Buttermilk and Haden!
